On February 27th, Professor Qingyan Jiang and Professor Gang Shu of the College of Animal Science of South China Agricultural University took the Guangdong Laboratory of Lingnan Modern Agricultural Science and Technology / Guangdong key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition Regulation as the first organizational affiliation, and published a research article entitled Exercise-induced a-ketoglutaric acid stimulates muscle hypertrophy and fat loss through OXGR1-dependent adrenal activation online in the international mainstream academic journal The EMBO Journal (Biology Zone 1, IF2018=11.227). The mechanism of exercise-induced α-ketoglutaric acid in regulating muscle hypertrophy and fat loss was revealed.

Professor GangShu is the corresponding author of this article . The first authors are YexianYuan , doctoral candidate of South China Agricultural University admitted in 2018, PingwenXu , assistant professor of Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, The University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, IL, USA, and QingyanJiang , professor of South China Agricultural University.URL of the Article: https://www.embopress.org/doi/10.15252/embj.2019103304

The level of fat deposition not only affects human health, but also serves an important factor in determining carcass quality of livestock and poultry. Physical exercise is considered to be one of the most effective and safest ways of fat loss, but the underlying chemical and physiological mechanisms are not fully understood. A great deal number of metabolites (myometabolites) is generated by skeletal muscle during exercise. Previous studies by the nutrition physiology research group have shown that Succinic Acidproduced by endurance exercise can promote the transformation of skeletal muscle fiber type from fast muscle to slow muscle through SUCNR1, increasing its exercise endurance and improve quality of the muscle (EMBOR, 2019).

A metabolomics analysis is further made to find that resistance exercise can significantly increase plasma α-ketoglutarate (AKG) levels. AKG generated by resistance exercise can stimulates the adrenal release of adrenaline and fat loss through oxoglutarate receptor 1 (OXGR 1) expressed in adrenal glands, thereby reducing fat deposition.Thestudy is not only expected to develop AKG as anexercise alternative nutrient for the treatment of obesity and to improve the carcass quality of livestock and poultry, but also is of great significance for the in-depth understanding of the negative feedback regulation of metabolic intermediate product on endocrine mechanism.
